Then<br \/>\nshow ended, and local NPR-guy Norm Howard came on to announce traffic and weather.<br \/>\n&#8220;And that&#8217;s why we ask for your contributions,&#8221; he said in his dry baritone.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI&#8217;m not sure if he meant, &#8220;because we provide you with hardhitting high-quality<br \/>\nstories like that one,&#8221; or &#8220;because otherwise, our staff will have to scrabble<br \/>\nfor a living any way they can, hint, hint.&#8221;  Either way, it was pretty darn funny.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOK, so you want even funnier than those pranksters at NPR?<br \/>\nWell, how about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\" title=\"Is it fair to pick on a mere Trade Rag?\">C|NET<\/a>?  Today they had<br \/>\na guest <a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/2010-1075-847893.html\" title=\"C|Net article by some doofus CEO\">article on web services<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe author was Frank Moss, who came out swinging at Microsoft, IBM, Sun, and BEA<br \/>\n(how sad that everyone&#8217;s forgotten about HP).  After jeering at the big vendors,<br \/>\nMoss says (warning: marketroid language ahead, may not be appropriate for sensible readers):\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Okay, that&#8217;s the pain&#8211;now for the pain reliever. <\/p>\n<p>What I see emerging is a new layer of vendor-neutral software that sits on top of the Web services platforms from all the major players&#8211;the <em>&#8220;Web services automation&#8221; layer<\/em>. [Emphasis mine]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nHmmmm, I thought.  What the heck is &#8220;web services automation&#8221;?  This would<br \/>\nrequire further research.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFortunately, I didn&#8217;t have to go too far.<br \/>\nMoss is CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowstreet.com\" title=\"The 'Web Services Platform Company'!\">Bowstreet<\/a>, a software<br \/>\ncompany that &#8220;unleashes the power of web services&#8221;.  Here&#8217;s an excerpt from<br \/>\na helpful page titled, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowstreet.com\/whybowstreet\/oursolutions.html\" title=\"WARNING: 'solution' used as physical noun\">Our<br \/>\nsolutions<\/a>&#8220;:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nWhat is the Bowstreet Business Web Factory?<br \/> <br \/>\nThe next-generation <em>web services automation<\/em> system, which works across<br \/>\nheterogeneous web services platforms and provides the capability for modeling,<br \/>\nassembly, dynamic change management and mass customization&#8230;<br \/>\n[Emphasis mine]\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWell, OK, I still have no idea what a &#8220;web services automation&#8221; system is.  But<br \/>\nsurprise, surprise &#8212; Moss is selling one!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nYes, yes, I know.  C|NET and all the rest of the industry rags aren&#8217;t even close to<br \/>\nlegitimate journalism.  They are merely conduits of<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/info.astrian.net\/jargon\/terms\/f\/fud.html\" title=\"Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt\">FUD<\/a> and<br \/>\nadvertisement.  But sheesh, they could <em>try<\/em> a little harder.  Keep<br \/>\nup a pretense, you know?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, OK, I still have no idea what a &#8220;web services automation&#8221; system is.
