The article ends with a nice quote from the<br \/>\nChairman of the SEC, Harvey Pitt:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nPitt lamented the impact of Enron&#8217;s dissipation on regular people who trusted the company.<br \/>\n&#8220;It is these Americans whose faith fuels our markets, who have no lobby and no trade<br \/>\nassociations, whose interests are, and must be, paramount,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I am appalled at<br \/>\nwhat happened to them as a result of Enron&#8217;s collapse.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nChairman Pitt&#8217;s concern for the average American investor would be truly<br \/>\nheartwarming&#8230; if only he hadn&#8217;t played such a large part in<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/doc.mhtml?i=20011217&amp;s=chait121701\" title=\"TNR article on Pitt's sordid past\">creating the legal<br \/>\nenvironment that let Enron rip off those investors in the first place<\/a>.<br \/>\nOops!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWell, the Superbowl is over, and the Patriots, 14-point underdogs, beat the<br \/>\nSt. Louis Rams 20-17 in an exciting last-minute field goal.  But even more exciting,<br \/>\napparently, were the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drugfreeamerica.org\/\" title=\"US gov's anti-drug home page\">Partnership for a<br \/>\nDrug-Free America<\/a>&#8216;s Superbowl TV commercials, which pointed out that the drug trade<br \/>\nsupports criminals and terrorists.<br \/>\nWell, the PDFA was sloppy; they conflated the tens of millions of dollars of<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/chronicle\/archive\/2001\/10\/04\/MN67246.DTL\" title=\"SF Chronicle on the Taliban heroin connection\" >Taliban<br \/>\nheroin funding<\/a> with the six hundred million dollars of<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/chronicle\/archive\/2001\/11\/07\/ED90644.DTL\" title=\"SF Chronicle on unrest in Columbia\">cocaine<br \/>\nmoney that went to the FARC<\/a> with the rest of the illegal drug industry.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis of course<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/slate.msn.com\/?id=2061602\" title=\"Slate's verdict: 'manipulative'\">prompted<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/scriptingnews.userland.com\/backissues\/2002\/02\/04#superbowlCommercials\" title=\"blather from Dave Winer\">numerous<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/fuzzybelly.org\/fuzzybelly\/weblog\/archives\/00000827.php\" title=\"'bullshit propaganda'! Eeek.\">self-righteous<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/radio.weblogs.com\/0101122\/stories\/2002\/02\/04\/superbowlPdfa.html\" title=\"conflates all econ activity with drug-buying\">screeds<\/a><br \/>\nfrom the other side that managed to muddy the issue further, claiming that<br \/>\nthe government is trying to tie marijuana to Al-Qaeda.  I admit, the screedists did a good job.<br \/>\nThe straw-man argument that &#8220;smoking a joint supports terrorism!&#8221; can now be considered<br \/>\nOfficially Knocked Down.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOn the other hand&#8230; according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norml.org\" title=\"National Org. for the Reform of Marijuana Laws\">NORML<\/a>,<br \/>\nAmericans consume at least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norml.org\/facts\/econ_6.shtml\" title=\"NORML's figures on marijuans consumption\">1200<br \/>\nto 1800 metric tons<\/a> of 6% THC cannabis per year.  Here&#8217;s the bad news: those<br \/>\nhundreds of metric tons were <em>not<\/em> grown by your<br \/>\ngoofy slacker college roommate in his dorm room closet.  No, I&#8217;m afraid the bulk of the revenue<br \/>\nwent to some very anti-social men in Northern California or Mexico.  Men with guns and bear traps<br \/>\nand dogs trained to kill.  And what products and services did these men purchase<br \/>\nwith their profits?  As much as I wish otherwise, methinks they did <em>not<\/em><br \/>\ninvest in Enron.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWe Americans have spent the last few months bitching and moaning about &#8220;the root causes&#8221;<br \/>\nof terrorism.  Where do these grievances come from?  &#8220;<em>Why do they hate us?<\/em>&#8221;<br \/>\nWell, we can debate whether the Arab world is justified in hating us from now &#8217;till<br \/>\nDoomsday.  In the meantime, I&#8217;ll tell you who <em>does<\/em> have real grievances<br \/>\nagainst the USA. The Colombians, that&#8217;s who.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOf course, if we legalized all drugs, this problem would go away.<br \/>\nAnd I&#8217;ve got no objections to that.  That&#8217;s the best way to cut the legs out<br \/>\nfrom under the organized criminals who profit from the business.<br \/>\nHowever, just because you support drug legalization, don&#8217;t<br \/>\nfor a second think that means you&#8217;re pure as the driven snow when you consume<br \/>\nthem.  Your choices have consquences;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdoj.gov\/dea\/pubs\/cngrtest\/ct971029.htm\" title=\"Thanks for fucking up Mexico, potheads!\">unfortunately, you don&#8217;t usually end up paying them<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we can debate whether the Arab world is justified in hating us from now &#8217;till Doomsday.
