{"id":47,"date":"2002-01-30T10:24:16","date_gmt":"2002-01-30T15:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goer.org\/wordpress\/good_guys_and_bad_guys"},"modified":"2002-01-30T10:24:16","modified_gmt":"2002-01-30T15:24:16","slug":"good_guys_and_bad_guys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goer.org\/Journal\/2002\/01\/good_guys_and_bad_guys.html","title":{"rendered":"Good Guys and Bad Guys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nSometimes, we nerds win.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI&#8217;m referring of course to the tale of<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/home.uchicago.edu\/~sbjensen\/pk.html\" title=\"Not a priori prom king material\">Steuard Jensen, Prom King<\/a>.<br \/>\nAs it turns out, Steuard was a physics major at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hmc.edu\" title=\"Harvey Mudd College\">HMC<\/a>,<br \/>\njust one year behind me.  I stumbled across his page by accident.<br \/>\nOf course, his story is still not <em>quite<\/em> as good as the one about<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/news\/archive\/2002\/01\/27\/state1344EST0022.DTL\" title=\"although it's debatable...\">the<br \/>\nstraight-A clarinet player who took Miss December 1989 to his Winter Formal<\/a>,<br \/>\nbut all in all, not bad.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn other news, Linda Lay is<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/news\/archive\/2002\/01\/28\/national1101EST0536.DTL\" title=\"SF Chron article\">bemoaning<br \/>\nher husband&#8217;s fate<\/a>.  The spin is that the family is facing bankruptcy, and that Ken Lay<br \/>\nis an &#8220;honest, decent, moral human being who would do absolutely nothing wrong.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s funny how bankruptcy just kinda creeps up on you like that.  I mean, <em>I<\/em><br \/>\nhaven&#8217;t cashed out $101 million dollars in stock, and <em>I<\/em> don&#8217;t<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/aspentimes.com\/dynews01\/011502.b.htm\" title=\"Aspen Times on Lay's real estate\">own several multimillion dollar<br \/>\nhomes in Aspen<\/a>, and yet somehow I manage to pay most of my creditors on time.<br \/>\nMaybe his teenagers have, like, <em>huge<\/em> phone bills or something.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHeck, forget about Lay.  I&#8217;m still having trouble feeling sorry for<br \/>\nthose poor Enron employees.  I mean, if you&#8217;re a white-collar worker<br \/>\nat a big company, you <em>know<\/em> what&#8217;s going on.  Sure, you probably<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t know enough to be prosecuted for anything.  But&#8230; you hear rumors.<br \/>\nYou pick up on things at meetings, on email aliases, in casual conversations.<br \/>\nYou just kind of <em>know<\/em> things you&#8217;re not supposed to know, unless you&#8217;re<br \/>\nsocially blind, deaf, and dumb.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHere&#8217;s who I do feel sorry for: the janitors.  And the landscapers, and the cafeteria<br \/>\npeople, and the workers who built and maintained Enron&#8217;s plants and pipelines.<br \/>\nAnd possibly the admins.  But as for the energy traders and the IT department?<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s see&#8230; you earned your living screwing over helpless people for money, but<br \/>\nit didn&#8217;t occur to you that perhaps your bosses viewed <em>you<\/em> in the same light.<br \/>\nWell, tough luck and good riddance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, we nerds win.
