The killer murdered the security guard and<br \/>\nthen charged into the main hall armed with guns and grenades.  He ended up killing<br \/>\nfive more civilians, including the little girl&#8217;s grandfather.  This heroic act of<br \/>\nresistance was apparently in retaliation for the assassination of Raed al-Karmi.<br \/>\nKarmi was the leader of a terrorist cell associated with<br \/>\nArafat&#8217;s Fatah faction &#8212; he was wanted by Israel for, among other things,<br \/>\nkidnapping and murdering two Jewish restaurant owners.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI don&#8217;t see what Fatah hopes to accomplish with this &#8212; other than<br \/>\nmaking it increasingly obvious that, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/012102\/halevi012102.html\" title=\"TNR article\">Yossi<br \/>\nKlein Halevi states<\/a> in this week&#8217;s<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\" title=\"The New Republic home page\">TNR<\/a>, &#8220;to demand that Arafat dismantle<br \/>\nPalestine&#8217;s terrorist infrastructure is absurd&#8230; the biggest terrorist<br \/>\ninfrastructure in the PA is the PA itself.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFor many years, I believed that if only things would quiet down long enough to<br \/>\nestablish a Palestinian state, peace would take hold.  But after these last<br \/>\nfew months&#8230; what evidence is there that a full-fledged<br \/>\nPalestinian nation would do anything other than simply kill more Israelis, faster?<br \/>\nHow is Israel supposed to keep Katushya rockets out of terrorist hands once<br \/>\nit loses control of the borders?  No, I&#8217;ve realized that I was wrong, and that<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/Journal\/2001\/Dec\/#6\" title=\"journal: on Hamas charities\">Hamas is right<\/a>:<br \/>\nthere will never be peace in Israel.
