What have I missed?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.sjsu.edu\/depts\/english\/2004.htm\" title=\"A contest for bad writing\">Bulwer-Lytton 2004 is out<\/a>. Get it while it&#8217;s hot.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/annevankesteren.nl\/\" title=\"Weblog on Markup and Style\">Anne van Kesteren<\/a> is back from vacation, and he is on <em>fire<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/annevankesteren.nl\/archives\/2004\/07\/xhtml-faq\" title=\"A sideways glance at the Official XHTML FAQ\">What&#8217;s the deal with XHTML?<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/annevankesteren.nl\/archives\/2004\/07\/bandwidth\" title=\"Only if you don't think too hard\">Does XHTML <em>really<\/em> save bandwidth over HTML?<\/a> Day by day, bit by little bit, we all edge closer to markup sanity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Meanwhile, Jacques is back too, and he seems <a href=\"http:\/\/golem.ph.utexas.edu\/~distler\/blog\/archives\/000404.html\" title=\"'Nothing to see here, move along'\">rather underwhelmed<\/a> by all the hype over the Stephen Hawking&#8217;s now famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/news\/news.jsp?id=ns99996151\" title=\"'Hawking cracks black hole paradox'\">black hole information loss wager<\/a>. After all, as Jacques reminds us, &#8220;Anyone who hasn&#8217;t been <em>asleep<\/em> for the past 6 years knows that quantum gravity in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space has unitary time evolution.&#8221; Actually, what I find even more interesting is the fact that Jacques&#8217;s post is titled, &#8220;No Information Lost Here!&#8221;, and is sitting at the URL <code>http:\/\/golem.ph.utexas.edu\/~distler\/blog\/archives\/000<strong style=\"color: red\">404.html<\/strong><\/code>. <em>Coincidence??<\/em>  I think no&#8211; oh, heck, it&#8217;s probably a coincidence.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The World of Warcraft Beta developers are hard at work, <a href=\"http:\/\/worldofwarcraft.com\/thread.aspx?fn=wow-general&amp;t=146418#Post146418\" title=\"reinventing the wheel\">furiously redesigning the in-game auction houses<\/a>.  Seems like they&#8217;re spending a lot of time on this, particularly since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/\" title=\"yay for automated proxy bidding\">someone else<\/a> has already done most of the design grunt work for them. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>In other <acronym>MMORPG<\/acronym> news, City of Heroes has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofheroes.com\/paper\/newspaper.html\" title=\"Bloody good chap, that Hero 1\">implemented capes<\/a>. What I really like about this is that they tried to fold this into the story. It&#8217;s not that the developers didn&#8217;t quite get capes working in time for the release &#8212; no, no, no, it&#8217;s because all the heroes had been in <em>mourning<\/em> over one of their fallen comrades. Nicely done! Although come to think of it, why didn&#8217;t Sony ever try this with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everquest.com\/\" title=\"'This feature is working as intended'\">Everquest<\/a>? For example, rangers sucked for the first three-and-a-half years of the game <em>not<\/em> because of a development problem, but because they were all in <em>mourning<\/em>.  They were all holding back, see?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Well, forget all these fancy-schmantzy MMORPGs.  I&#8217;m holding out for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homestarrunner.com\/pqtrailer.html\" title=\"featuring two-bit mono PC internal speaker sound\">Peasant&#8217;s Quest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Finally, via Russ, I found out that fellow &#8217;97 HMC alum <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eightypercent.net\/\" title=\"\">Joe Beda<\/a> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/channel9.msdn.com\/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=948\" title=\"'Is Avalon a way to take over the Web?'\">development lead on Microsoft&#8217;s Avalon team<\/a>.  Right on, Joe!  For the record, I&#8217;m not even a little bit jealous of Joe&#8217;s incredibly important and prestigious job.  Although that&#8217;s probably because I can take comfort in the fact that <em>I<\/em> still have all my hair.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, forget all these fancy-schmantzy MMORPGs.
