{"id":213,"date":"2003-10-17T08:34:20","date_gmt":"2003-10-17T12:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goer.org\/wordpress\/the_end_of_gerrymandering"},"modified":"2003-10-17T08:34:20","modified_gmt":"2003-10-17T12:34:20","slug":"the_end_of_gerrymandering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goer.org\/Journal\/2003\/10\/the_end_of_gerrymandering.html","title":{"rendered":"The End of Gerrymandering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What with the recent spectacle of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/cs\/CDA\/story.hts\/editorial\/2157179\">Tom DeLay waltzing into Texas (in an off year) and breezily eliminating six or seven Democratic seats<\/a>, coupled with the new enthusiasm for the Schwarzenegger-backed &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.acssonline.org\/news\/20031015-whats-next-redistricting.asp\">fair redistricting<\/a>&#8220;&#8211; I&#8217;ve been thinking about gerrymandering.  A modest proposal:<\/p>\n<p>For any proposed congressional district, take the perimeter squared and divide by the area.  This number yields the district&#8217;s <em>gerrymander number<\/em>, <var>G<\/var>.<sup>[<a href=\"#17-1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup>   Now set a cap on <var>G<\/var> &#8212; say, for the sake of argument, 100. <\/p>\n<p>Taa-daa.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and another thing &#8212; if I were King, &#8220;team&#8221; would be spelled T-E-I-M.  Thank you very much.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"17-1\"><\/a> <small>1.
